Miller’s House, Aysgarth Falls, North Yorks. £475k

Now for something completely different.  The estate agent does not mention whether the Miller’s House is listed, but never the less it is an historic house in a beautiful setting by the falls. The mill itself is listed grade ii and dated 1854. I saw this one in the flesh, as it were, from the outside, last August.  It is adjacent to the place where one buys cream teas.  I include it mainly for its setting, both historical and geographical.

I think I would be afraid small children would fall in the river, so I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone with babies or small children.  Depressives or attention seekers who might be tempted to throw themselves in the water, for dramatic effect at the end of a big row, should also probably avoid it.

The house is ripe for a makeover, but I admire the 1990 period bold colour schemes, more than the beige that came a little later or the greys of today.  I think I would tone down the greens to more period hues, such as Olive Colour, Tea Green, Parlour Green or Pea Colour, and simply mute the oranges to slightly more terracotta shades and contrast them with Jacobean rose colours and shades based on red raddle which was used for marking sheep. I would avoid whites and greys and the cold lilac colour in one of the bedrooms, as the area is quite cold and grey looking, despite its great beauty.

The egg yolk yellow range type cooker, is a nice bright thing. I’m not sure how the plate rack above the hot plates would work out, I suppose it’s one way to warm the plates.  I don’t like fitted kitchens, but I would only take this one out because I would need to put my old livery cupboard, house keeper cupboard, dresser and mule chest, coffers etc. somewhere.

The rooms are not terribly large and one would need rustic and vernacular furniture of the last two hundred years to give it the right feel.  Mahogany, satinwood or rosewood would not really work, though the Victorian square piano looks quite well in the photograph, only oak, ash, sycamore, elm and walnut would really do.
