Hotspur House, Arnison Terrace, Allendale, Northumberland. £595K

Hotspur House is the part to the left of the marvelous, early 18th century looking doorway (though the house was actually built in the early 19th century, 1806) with three windows on the ground floor, two bowed, the central one flat and two above, bowed, and the single window to the right of the front door, and those above it.   It is listed grade II.  Strangely the floor plans show the dining room as only having two windows, but the photograph of the dining room definitely shows three.

I don't know what it is about this house that makes me think of coming home from school.  Perhaps the photograph was taken in the first week of September, but it fills me with a nostalgic sense, of being 12 years old and starting secondary school and all those new experiences. And what could be more calming and lovely in those circumstances than coming back to this beautifully decorated and peaceful, period house?

The dining room is bright enough to take that Regency, wine colour on the walls.  It goes well with the large, good quality Regency dining table and chairs in the period style.  They could do with a sideboard or two in here, and an older mirror above the fire.

There is a nice stone floor in the kitchen, which though fitted is attractive, and the black Aga is a practical idea.

The drawing room, with the bay window at the back is pleasant, and would benefit from more elegant period furniture.  There is a less formal dining area off the kitchen which is practical if you have a family, but might serve equally as a playroom or informal sitting room.

There are five good sized bedrooms and the bathroom is stylish, though I suspect 'Jill' will end up cleaning 'Jack's' sink most of the time, when she can't bear the sight of the tide mark and the shaved hairs any longer.

The staircase does not feature in the details so perhaps it is not original, but there is a lovely arched window at the top of the stairs, which one can see form the photograph of the back of the property.

The garden seems to have been professionally designed and has a flagged seating area and raised graveled beds.  It must get a fair amount of sun, as the lavender is flowering well.
